Dear Billy -SOLD OUT

Friday 16th June 7.30pm

There’s a guy. You know him. You know…big hair, wee beard, glasses, talks like that. You know? You know. The guy…The Big Yin.

Billy Connolly needs no introduction. He is a national treasure.  From the shipyards of the Clydeside to his trailblazing and extraordinary stage and movie exploits, he is woven into Scottish culture.

Everyone has a Billy Story.

An expert team of story gatherers has created a collection of these moving and hilarious tales. Gary McNair, one of Scotland’s best theatre makers, has turned these stories into a special show celebrating the Big Yin and what he means to us.

Gary is hitting the road with a band, collecting more stories as they go, making every show different.

Each one a unique chance to laugh, sing, and celebrate the man and the legend.

Written and performed by Gary McNair, directed by Joe Douglas, Music by Simon Liddell.

VAUGHAN                 The Lark Ascending

BRITTEN                    Frank Bridge Variations

PÄRT                          Cantus In Memoriam Benjamin Britten

BEETHOVEN            Symphony No 1

Isabelle van Keulen director/violin

From the haunting to the life-affirming, this concert has it all.

Vaughan Williams's lark leads the way, soaring effortlessly into the skies before Britten takes potshots at the waltz (and a host of other European standards) in a warm tribute to his teacher.

After Pärt's haunting elegy to Britten, it's time for Beethoven to flex his creative muscles in his very first symphony. It may owe a debt to Haydn, but there's a constant undertow of originality, an undeniable sense of greater things to come ...

Scottish Opera Young Company - Maud & Down in the valley

Saturday 29th July 6pm

★★★★★ ‘...if this is the future of Scottish Opera, it’s in excellent hands.’
- ScotsGay Arts on Rubble (2022)

Scottish Opera Young Company moves between centuries to tell stories of young people finding connection and survival within – and sometimes despite – their respective insular worlds.

Maud, composed by Henry McPherson

In midsummer, while picking blackberries in an ancient wood, a child stumbles upon a tiny creature in the undergrowth. Taking her new-found treasure home, however, not everyone shares her love. A retelling of a traditional folk tale, Maud is written and composed by Henry McPherson – composer, improviser, and teacher – and received its premiere in 2018 as a winner of Scottish Opera’s Opera Sparks competition.

Down in the Valley, composed by Kurt Weill

In another time, two young adults in an isolated religious village have fallen in love against their elder’s wishes – and the girl disobeys her mother to go dancing with the boy. When a horrible accident changes their lives forever, they have one night to reckon with their fates. Composer Kurt Weill’s and librettist Arnold Sundgaard’s magical and menacing folk-inspired opera is a bittersweet coming-of-age tale showing the light and darkness of one claustrophobic community.

By connecting the two operas on a single Hebridean-inspired set that transforms before the audience’s eyes, this immersive double bill shows the grit it takes to survive within and against a harsh landscape and even harsher mob mentalities. Directed by Flora Emily Thomson (As The Seasons Turn 2022) and conducted by SOYC Artistic Director Chris Gray, a cast of 11 young performers bring these two stories to life

Fred McAulay1.jpg

Fred MacAulay - What (Ever) Next : Again

Saturday 5th August 8pm

In 2022 Veteran (I prefer ‘Legend’ FM) Scottish stand-up comedian Fred MacAulay hit the road again with a summer tour of 18 venues around Scotland ahead of his run at Edinburgh Fringe in August.

Stand-up comedy had been hit pretty hard by the pandemic and gigs were cancelled as soon as the country went into Lockdown. The return of audiences to theatres and Stand-Up venues was a delight to see.

Fred said: “Putting things in perspective though, there were many things far, far worse than your job disappearing for a couple of years, but it was time to get back into theatres and halls for a bit of a laugh.”

Fred: “I was so pleased to see so many people coming to those shows in 2022 – especially the venues which sold out! I’ve been very fortunate in my career and have done a lot of radio and television shows over the years ….. but what I absolutely love more than anything (about my job) is standing on stage and making a room full of people hoot with laughter …… especially in Scotland”.

So…..there was only one thing for it. Get back out in 2023 and get to some of the places I hadn’t been to in 2022 with an updated show. You can’t stand still in comedy (well you can if the microphone cable is very short) but when much of our lives is concerned with politics…..well we know just how quickly things can change! I’d barely got my pencil sharpened to write gags about Liz Trust and she’d GONE! And she took the UK economy with her.

Expect to hear more tales of Lockdown weddings, gags about complying with the regulations, getting back to work after a long lay-off, things that bound us together …. (like finding out that your bottle bins were too small), the tribulations of getting a train ticket refund, nuisance phone calls …… and ….. OH YES…….becoming a grandparent for the first time!!

Still regarded as one of the top Scottish comics of his generation, Fred MacAulay can be heard on the radio every Sunday morning from 10:00am till 1pm with a mix of music and chat: (Clyde2/Forth2/Tay2/Westsound/Northsound/MFR).
